Mérida

Mérida is also known as the white city – “La Ciudad Blanca” – and is considered the most beautiful colonial town of the Yucatán Peninsula.

In any case, it is the undisputed cultural center with a wide range of museums and galleries.
The streets around the lively central square (“Zócalo”) are traffic-calmed.
Particularly interesting, in addition to the Cathedral, is the Governor’s Palace with its large-format wall paintings in the stairwell of the courtyard.

Very enjoyable is a visit in the late afternoon and early evening, when the squares of the historic center come back to life and regular free open-air concerts and dancing performances take place. Especially on Sundays, when, in the course of the “Mérida en domingo” series, the historic center is closed to cars and public and cultural life almost entirely takes place outside until late in the evening.
Numerous food and market stalls, concerts, singing and dancing performances attract thousands to the city center every time.
Anyone traveling to Mérida with a rental car can visit interesting and varied destinations around the city within reach for a day trip without having to change the hotel every day.
These destinations include, among others, Uxmal and the other Mayan sites of the Ruta Puuc, which are on the way from or to Campeche.
